Acousonde Firmware 2.1 released

Dear Acousonde Users,

Firmware version 2.1 is now available. The primary new features are:

Dramatically decreased (by up to 50%) power consumption
High-frequency units now capable of design 232 kHz sample rate
Fixed unreliable switching to next data card in some older units

New features are planned for a July release, so if you do not expect to use your Acousonde units until the summer, you may wish to postpone updating.

Acousonde Firmware 2.1.0b Beta Test

Dear Acousonde User,

If you are subscribed to the Acousonde Announcements mailing list, you may have seen the email announcing the 232-kHz (and, for newer units, 464-kHz) sample rates supported by Firmware 2.1. The fast sample rates are only available for Acousondes with the high-frequency option installed, but the significantly improved power performance applies to all Acousondes; details at http://www.acousonde.com/news.html and http://www.acousonde.com/releasenotes.html .

While I would like to run more tests before officially releasing 2.1 in early March, a "beta-test" version 2.1.0b is available to current users on request.

Updating firmware requires an Apple notebook or desktop computer, some facility with a command-line interface, and procurement of a specialized infrared dongle. Complete instructions on the required equipment and how to update firmware may be obtained at http://www.acousonde.com/downloads/Acousonde_FirmwareUpdate.pdf .

Alternately, if you would like to identify specific sampling configurations that are important to your work, I would be glad to test those here before releasing 2.1.

Change to Acousonde accelerometer/compass axis conventions

Dear Acousonde user,

In late December 2010 it became clear that the conventions used by the Acousonde to identify the X, Y, and Z axes for the accelerometer and compass were not easily consistent with industry standards for underwater and airborne vehicles.

Starting in 2011, all new units will be released with new axis conventions that are more consistent with industry practice. To avoid confusion, I recommend modifying any existing Acousonde units that use the older conventions. A detailed description of the old and new conventions, and how to update, is located here:

If you do not plan on using the accelerometer and/or compass data from your Acousonde, then there is no reason to update. Otherwise I strongly encourage doing so.

The document linked to above describes how to update using just your Palm; however, if you would like to return the units to me for updating, I would be happy to take care of this. I would update the unit's firmware at the same time. Firmware status may be viewed at
