Subject: Acousonde now samples at 232 and 464 kHz

New firmware has brought the Acousonde underwater sound recorder to its latest milestone, enabling the hardware to sample acoustics at 232 kHz as originally designed. Newer units with this firmware, using fast storage cards, have sustained sample rates of 464 kHz.

The new capability results from shifting the majority of the sampling effort to a hardware coprocessor built into every Acousonde. Reliance on the coprocessor not only allows faster sample rates, it also reduces power consumption by up to a half, enabling the Acousonde to record longer given sufficient storage capacity. At the 464-kHz sample rate, a standard A-cell lithium battery can provide enough power to fill or nearly fill the Acousonde 3A's maximum 128 GB of onboard storage.
